Ronnie
Hornaday lll could hardly wait
to start his racing career and
follow
in the footsteps of his father
and grandfather. As a boy
he looked forward
to watching his father race at
the, now defunct, Saugus
Speedway. He would
also hang around the garage at
home and learn all he could
about the
mechanics of a race car and the
business of auto racing.
When he turned 16 years
old, Three started racing at
Kern County Speedway
(Calif) in 1995 in a #97 Camaro
Street Stock. His only
crew members were his
cousin, who helped him fix the
car on pit stops and his
Grandfather, who was
his crew chief. He
finished 2nd in points that year
and won Rookie of the
Year honors. The following year,
young Hornaday moved east to be
with his
parents. He took a job as
a crew member on Dale Earnhardt
Junior's Late
Model car, meanwhile continuing
to learn everything he
could about race car
mechanics. A year later,
he started racing a #97 Late
Model at Caraway
Speedway NC.
A few years later, he
joined his now famous father on
the Truck Series tour
for five races in 1999. His best
finish (16th) that year came at
the always
challenging Nazareth Speedway in
Pennsylvania. Although hampered
by lack of
sponsorship in the following
years, he is still passionate
about racing and
is considered, by those who view
his driving style on the track,
a
levelheaded smart racer. In
2000, in his only race that
year, he finished
23rd at the season finale at
California Speedway. The
following year, his
sole race came during Daytona
Speedweeks, where he finished
21st with motor
problems.
When not behind the wheel,
Ronnie can be found working
under the hood. Due
to his years of diligent study
of the craft, there's not too
this young man
doesn't know about working on a
race car. He is able to
hang sheet metal,
build gears, work on shocks and
pretty much build a race truck
from the
ground up on his own. He is
currently taking an intent
interest in advanced
shock technology and plans to
make that his next area of
study.
Ronnie Three states" My
father always said ‘If you
learn to work on these
cars, it will make you a better
driver'. So to this day I still
live by those
words and learn all I can"
Three likes building his own
race cars, working on
the engine and helping the guys
on the crew when he races.
When not racing Ronnie
works as a crew member for the No. 2 NCTS Team ASE Dodge with Jimmy
Spencer. He has also recently signed a deal to become Dodge’s test driver.
His
young daughter Lacey is the
apple of his eye and she is her
dad's number one
fan. |
